BRUNCH ON THE FARM
Drawing together an unlimited supply of coffee, a delicious two course brunch and a whole lot of creativity, what’s not to love about Brunch on the Farm?
Organised by a creative concoction of folk that reside there, Brunch on the Farm is a laid-back event that epitomises slow living, with a real sense of retreat from the usual weekend chores.
Over three consecutive days from 8-10 April, the collective of talent transformed the barn on Argal Home Farm into a dining, coffee-drinking and workshop space, with bunting, wild flowers, festoon bulbs and two large banquet tables lined with hay bales either side for seating.
The farm is located just above the Argal and College reservoirs near Falmouth, but you wouldn’t know how close you were to the town; once there, only views of rolling hills and the water glistening in the valley below can be seen, which was enhanced by the bright spring sunshine that was lighting up every corner of Cornwall.
Brunch tickets are sold with the optional add on of workshops, including singing, screen printing, pinch pottery, home brewing coffee and sewing. I was signed up for the screen-printing course, something which had been on my bucket list for a while and the journey there was spent brainstorming things I wanted to print.
We were asked to arrive at 11am to give us enough time to grab a coffee and have a wander around the farm, before taking our seats for brunch at 11.30am. We strolled through to the orchard and immaculate veg patch, which housed raised beds and a greenhouse, a set-up that would spark jealousy within any budding gardeners.
The delicious smell of freshly-grilled mackerel wafted across to us, so we promptly followed our noses to the barn.
We each ordered a hot drink; a large pot of organic Waterloo tea, a flat white and a decaf americano (which tasted just as good as the real thing apparently), and took our seats.
The first course was served: a slice of toasted sourdough drizzled with olive oil, topped with fennel, citrus, harissa and two grilled Cornish sardines. The vegetarian option was two strips of halloumi, and almost prompted food envy, but not quite. It was the perfect portion size and left just enough space for the second course, a humungous mound of shakshuka atop a thick slice of sourdough bread and served with home made labneh (a middle-eastern cheese made with slightly salted strained yoghurt, a little like soured cream).
Blending a mix of cumin, garlic, capsicum, paprika, tomatoes, baked eggs and Persian feta, the shakshuka went down a treat, although I had to admit defeat halfway through, cursing the early morning piece of toast I’d consumed to stave off any hunger.
Now it was time for the workshop with Kiwi Printing, a Cornwall-based company run by the lovely Dena O’Brien.
Six of us took our hay bale seats around the square table and were guided through the techniques of screen printing by Dena and her Aussie assistant Jess, a great team that regularly teach workshops to various ages in schools and run courses in their printmaking studio.
We each spent a little time finding inspiration from the selection of books Dena and Jess had brought along and began drawing our designs, figuring out which parts would be colour and what would be left blank.
We then cut the shapes out with a sharp scalpel, a tricky business if you’d chosen an intricate design (luckily mine wasn’t – it resembled a four year old child’s drawing), and laid our stencil onto the paper our ink would be printed on. Dena helped hold the screen in place while we dolloped our chosen paint colour at the top and smeared it downwards, a ridiculously satisfying process that was a little harder than it looked.
We each made three prints and took them home as a token of our newly learned skills, something I will definitely be doing again.
Brunch is £15 per person with unlimited Yallah coffee and Waterloo organic tea, and the workshops start from £30 per person.
Other workshops that weekend included singing in three and four-part harmonies with Musical Director, Claire Ingleheart; screen printing with Kiwi Studios; a pinch pottery class with Hannah Lawrence; home brewing with Yallah Coffee; and learning to make a phone case with Ali Goodman, founder of Francli.
