ALTERNATIVE IDEAS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY IN CORNWALL

Posted on Feb 1, 2018 by

Coming up with creative ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day can be a daunting task for most of us, and sometimes a card and bunch of flowers just doesn’t cut it, so we’ve rounded up some more imaginative ways to declare your love.

If you want to wine and dine your sweetheart, scroll down for some of the best Valentine’s menus and dining events we’ve found, and book your table for two.

A TASTY TOUR

Book a tour at one of the plentiful breweries or vineyards in Cornwall for a tour and tasting session. The county boasts a number of fantastic independent brewers and wine-makers who are willing to take guests behind the scenes to see the production process, with the opportunity for tastings too.

Skinner’s Brewery in Truro offers daily public tours led by experienced guides, followed by tutored beer tastings in the brewery’s tap room. If ale isn’t your thing, head to Camel Valley Vineyard for a grand tour and tasting and savour some of the finest wine that Cornwall has to offer.

TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE

Cornwall’s beautiful coastline is dotted with coves and bays that you may not have discovered before, so pack a picnic and head out on a romantic road trip. The coastal route from St Ives to Sennen Cove (with award-winning pub The Gurnard’s Head en route) hugs the coastline and offers magnificent views across the west Cornish coast.

Alternatively, the drive from Newquay to Padstow passes some beautiful spots, such as Bedruthan Steps and Watergate Bay, with towering cliffs and the perfect opportunity for an ‘extreme’ hot chocolate at The Beach Hut.

A jaunt around The Roseland Peninsula would be quite spectacular too, with incredible views from St Anthony Head, and don’t forget to stop at The Idle Rocks for afternoon tea.

LIVE MUSIC

Cosy up beside the log fire at Lusty Glaze and enjoy one of its infamous Woodburner Sessions. There’ll be live music from acoustic guitarist and singer Chris Webb on Valentine’s Day, which is completely free to attend, and the menu promises to be something special. For more information, visit the Lusty Glaze website.

WATCH AND LEARN

If your partner has always wanted to try something new, book a lesson or workshop for (as cheesy as it sounds) the gift that keeps on giving, and it’s a great way to spend time together too. If it’s pottery, classes are available at Leach Pottery in St Ives, with half day introductory courses from £50, and we really like the sound of crafting our own wooden handplane with Otter Surfboards.

Make your own screen print with the brilliant Kiwi Print Studio; or learn to cook some delicious dishes with a cookery workshop. Caroline at Fat Hen hosts some brilliant forage and feast classes, and we’d love to try the Wild Italian Cookery course, using wild veg and local fish to create authentic Italian dishes.

RIDE THE WAVES (OF LOVE)

Take the plunge and book a couple’s surf lesson at one of the many surf schools in Cornwall whose experienced instructors will have you riding the waves in no time. Although February isn’t the warmest time of the year to go surfing, it’s a fun opportunity to spend time with your partner as you battle the Cornish waves together, and it doesn’t matter if the weather’s not playing ball. Contact Wavehunters in Polzeath, Escape Surf School in Newquay, or Smart Surf School in Sennen Cove.

STAY THE NIGHT

The Scarlet Hotel in Mawgan Porth is a luxury hotel ‘just for grown ups’ that has romance at its heart, with couples’ spa treatments and uniquely presented rooms all boasting balconies and uninterrupted views over Mawgan Porth and the Atlantic Ocean. The Port Gaverne Hotel in Port Issac is also a brilliantly isolated getaway for two, with a wonderful restaurant downstairs that we’ve vowed to visit more often (read our write-up of a lovely supper there).

On the south coast, our pick is a stay at The Old Quay House, a beautifully-styled boutique hotel with a fantastic restaurant on the ground floor, which extends onto an expansive terrace and provides the perfect spot to share a bottle of Champagne and watch the boats bob along the Fowey Estuary.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Be part of something big this Valentine’s Day with Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Love Your Beach Day. Beach Cleans will be happening all around Cornwall, led by Your Shore Beach Rangers.

Get yourself down to your local beach, do a mini beach clean, draw or make a heart, take a picture and get it on social media using the following hashtags: #loveyourbeach #loveyourbeachfrom’nameofbeach’ i.e. #loveyourbeachfromnewquay #yourshorenetwork.
