We arrived at the Polurrian Bay Hotel on the Lizard Peninsula on a cold, dark evening, battling against the wind to open the huge front door. The contrast between outside and in couldn’t have been much wider. After a warm welcome from the lovely receptionist we were shown around the ground floor of the hotel, where Marconi famously stayed when he sent the first transatlantic message in 1901.

Smart yet comfortable, there were distinct lounge areas and I’d like to spend an evening with friends in the gorgeously grown up snug. The hotel has recently been refurbished and I loved the interior design with a mix of classic and contemporary furniture in the grand Edwardian building.

A log burner glowed invitingly in the huge open plan living room. We could only imagine that the sea was out there somewhere.

The bedrooms were well appointed, with comfy armchairs and the daily Polurrian newspaper was a nice touch. The crisp cotton sheets and proper feather filled duvets and pillows made for a sound night’s sleep. But the best bit was waking up to this view:

The dining room was calling, and so for breakfast. Our table was bathed in sunlight, and we watched the waves whilst tucking in. The extensive menu made choosing tricky. Everything from porridge to scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, waffles to mushrooms on toast, smoked kippers to a bacon sarnie.

The granola with fruit and berries was spot on, and the potato and black pudding hash with poached eggs so savoury and moreish. With copious amounts of tea, coffee and fruit juice we could have sat there for hours.

The Polurrian Bay Hotel is dog-friendly and ideal for families, with free childcare, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, games room, cinema room and its own beach at the bottom of the cliffs.

And how about this for a good idea? On a Sunday morning the hotel’s nannies will whisk your children away to Breakfast Club so you can enjoy a lie in and the Sunday papers.

We’ll be back, and next time we’ll be there to watch the sun set, have a dip in the pool, and hunker down in the snug.

Thank you to the staff who looked after us so well. We were guests of the hotel.
