RICK STEIN‘S FESTIVE FOOD
Rick Stein‘s pickles, chutneys and sauces are rather special, all of which are made in Padstow. The mincemeat is full of juicy fruit and almonds. We love the cranberry sauce, with beautiful orange and port flavours which will complement your turkey.
The Spicy Apple & Walnut Chutney has a great kick to it and was particularly good with a chunk of Davidstow Cheddar, but would go equally well with other cheeses and cold cuts. Containing 50% cucumber, the sharpness of the Bread and Butter Pickle cuts through rich flavours and would be an ideal accompaniment to a Boxing Day lunch of cold turkey and gammon, in a pulled pork bap or burger, or with baked cheese, fondue or raclette.
Cranberry Sauce, Bread and Butter Pickle and Spicy Apple and Walnut Chutney are £3.95 each and Mincemeat is £4.25.
Gently spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg and crammed full of juicy fruit, this Christmas pudding went down a treat in the Barefoot office – with an obligatory dollop of Rodda’s clotted cream.
Rich but perfectly balanced, moist and flavoursome, the pudding even comes in a proper ceramic bowl which you can use again and again.
The Christmas pudding is priced at £18 (small) / £22 (large).
All the Rick Stein products are available in their Padstow deli, or as part of a Christmas hamper, also available online.
RODDA’S CLOTTED CREAM AND CUSTARD
There’s not a lot that can’t be improved with a dollop of thick Rodda’s clotted cream, an essential ingredient to have in your fridge this Christmas. Pile it onto mince pies or Christmas pudding for pure indulgence.
Rodda’s custard is another gorgeous product, made with Cornish clotted cream and real vanilla seeds, it is thick and smooth, with the warmth of vanilla and comforting creamy texture. Ideal for any puds, or to have ready in your fridge for a quick festive trifle.
Both the clotted cream and custard are available from a wide range of outlets, and the clotted cream is also available direct from Rodda’s via their website. Prices start at £4.29 (including delivery) for a 113g (4oz) pot.
WINTER WARMER FROM HEALEYS
We love this warming winter drink, great for bonfire gatherings and Christmas parties, or even taken to the beach in a flask.
Healeys Limited Edition Winter Warmer Cyder is delicious – a spiced cyder infused with a blend of traditional winter spices including ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and orange – and can be enjoyed warmed or chilled.
Priced at £46.20 for six 750ml bottles and available to purchase online from www.healeyscyder.co.uk, at the Healeys Cyder Farm shop and at selected independent retailers.
DA BARA BAKERY‘S STOLLEN AND MINCEMEAT
Watch this space for more information about Da Bara Bakery‘s Stollen (no doubt delicious) and homemade mincemeat (being produced due to popular demand by customers).
GRUMPIES’ “CHRISTMAS IN A PIE”
We love Grumpies‘ pies. They taste homemade with crisp pastry and generous fillings, and are a very easy standby dinner. We always have a few stashed in our freezer for “emergencies”. This winter, Grumpies have come up with “Christmas in a pie”. The short crust pie is filled with turkey, cranberries, sage stuffing and a splash of port in a creamy bechamel sauce. Available from 1st November at selected stockists or buy online.
CLOUD NINE‘S SPICED CRANBERRY AND CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOWS
Lovingly hand crafted by Murphy Williams in her kitchen on the Port Eliot estate, these marshmallows are rather special. New for Christmas 2014 is “Spiced Cranberries and Chocolate with a dash of Port” flavour. Priced at £6.95 for 100g and available online and from selected stockists.
This year’s festive offering from James Strawbridge’s Posh Pasty Co. is made with spiced pastry and filled with mixed game and celeriac. When we’ve got our hands on one we’ll report back with our verdict! Available from 1 November from selected stockists.
CHRISTMAS IN A JAR
This is such a lovely idea from the clever people at My Little Beach Boutique. All your baking ingredients in a pretty jar to make life a little easier. £6.50 each.
I can’t do without Cornish Sea Salt‘s pinch pots, especially the luxury pepper blend which I use for almost everything.
This season try the two new pinch pots – cinnamon or rosemary (£2.50 each), which make perfect stocking fillers for food fans. The Cinnamon Sea Salt is good for tagines, roast gammon, apple pies and baking, and the Rosemary Sea Salt is ideal for roasts and stews.
CHEESE LOVERS’ HAMPER
This beautiful selection of products (above) is available as a “Cheese Lovers’ Hamper” from the lovely people at Woods Café in Cardinham Woods. Contains homemade chutney and pickled pears, a ‘salami’ made of date, apricot and pistachio, and rosemary roasted walnuts. Everything is homemade and especially chosen to go with cheese (see image below – cheese not included in hamper).
The hampers need to be pre ordered and collected from the café and cost £25 each. For more information phone 01208 78111.
New for 2014 is Bah! Humbug!, milk chocolate infused with natural mint oil and caramel. Being a fan of all things marzipanny, I particularly like the Stollen flavour (dark chocolate with almond flavouring topped with orange and raisins).
All available online, buy 6 or more and get 10% off. Free shipping on orders over £30.
PORK FROM PRIMROSE HERD
Primrose Herd‘s sausages include cranberry & rosemary and sage & red onion flavours, and all are produced to family recipes using the finest ingredients. Their gammons and hams are really useful to have about in the fridge around Christmas time – a whole cooked ham is a great standby option for when visitors descend.
Their Christmas hampers include a selection of bacon, sausages and prime pork cuts. Email [email protected] for a Christmas order form.
A BOXING DAY GOURMET PICNIC
If, by Boxing Day, you’ve had enough of cooking, then try a picnic from Gourmet Picnics, run by Amélies in Porthleven. With three different menus to choose from, each hamper comes with biodegradable crockery and cutlery, so you won’t even need to do the washing up. The food is all handmade to order, with a strong emphasis on local fish. From £35 per person.
The Hallmark Range offers a selection of the best Cornish foods which are complemented by some of the finest national brands. Their online deli store contains a myriad of ingredients, sure to entice even the most reluctant chef into the kitchen.
Their bespoke hampers are presented in a gift box or traditional wicker basket and make a great gift.
MEAT FROM NANCARROW FARM
The meat from Nancarrow Farm is homegrown, organic and delicious, with native breeds who are fed almost entirely on grass. We always have a joint of beef on Christmas Day, and you can’t get much better than a large rib roast from Nancarrow.
Make sure you order in plenty of time, either by phoning 01872 540343 or emailing, with local delivery available.

Can you help provide Christmas dinner for a family in need? This fantastic project was set up by Truro Vineyard Church eleven years ago, and this Christmas they are expanding their scheme with more collection points across the county.
All you need to do is fill a box with enough food for Christmas dinner for a family of 4 to 6, with all the trimmings, treats like mince pies and biscuits, Christmas pudding and chocolates. A typical box will cost you around £30. No fresh food, alcohol or cigarettes please! Here’s the list of what you need to include in your box.
For more information contact Cornwall Christmas Box. Please let them know if you intend to provide a box, and drop off your donation at a collection point between 11 and 14 December.
